General Questions About MediaMasterWhy would I ever need the service MediaMaster provides? What are the benefits?MediaMaster lets you store all your music in one place and access it from any internet connected computer or stream player. Having your music stored and organized in one place has several advantages:
- It’s accessable from anywhere you have an internet connection
- It allows you to make more room on your computer for other important data
- It’s safe and secure – your music will never vanish with a lost, stolen or damaged machine.
- You can access your music from all kinds of devices like your Tivo or Roku Soundbridge without having to set up special servers.
Also, with your music online a world of possibilites are open to you:
- You can publish information about your collection to blogs and profile pages on social networking sites with our widget.
- You can keep your friends up to date on what you’ve recently added to your collection.
- You can publish your own internet radio stations based on play lists you create.
What happens to my music once it’s on MediaMaster?
Your music is there for you to enjoy. We’ll keep it safe for you, and give you access to it from anywhere.
Beyond that, we give you control over what other people can see about your collection and do with it. You can decide what albums your friends see. You can decide to publish internet radio streams of your play lists or what you’re listening to now. It’s all up to you!
How can you provide this service for free?
While we’re in the early phases of developing this service, we’re going to allow people to use it for free. We’re more interested in getting it right and making it the best it can be than getting paid. This will change at some point, but for now we look at this as “Research and Development”.
We also appreciate your contribution to helping us get the service right, and we’ll make sure that our early adopters always get the best deal possible. So please sign up and send us feedback!
What kind of music can I put on MediaMaster?
Most digital music you own that’s not fouled with DRM. We’ll take any non-DRM’ed MP3, AAC (aka M4A) or WMA (except losslessly compressed) file and add it to your account. At this time we do not accept FLAC, OGG, Wave (aka CD audio or uncompressed audio). We do accept AAC (M4A) losslessly compressed files.
It’s important to us that you don’t put stolen music on the site. If you bought the CD or downloaded the MP3 from a legal service like eMusic, go ahead and upload it!
Will MediaMaster reveal my personal information?
We will never do this without your knowledge. We will only use your email address to send you information related to your account with us. If we become an advertising supported site, we will not sell your email address to advertisers.
How much music will MediaMaster store for me?
We are not accepting any more uploads at this time. Our servers are full and we are closing down. Sorry for the inconvenience, but the service became too expensive to operate for free anymore.
How is this service different from those in the past that were shut down due to copyright violations?
We are different for several reasons:
- We are not copying your music. We allow you to upload your music to our servers. Storing your music with us is equivalent to storing your music on your local computer’s hard disk. Think of us as your hard disk in the sky.
- Some of those services allowed you to make copies of other people’s music. We don’t allow that.
- We comply with the rules of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (aka DMCA), so we will remove music that violates copyright law. This will be done according the proper legal procedure.
Questions About Functionality
In the widget, can I skip to a particular track in a playlist?
You can begin playing from any track in a playlist, but once you’ve started listening you can only pause and resume. The widget is intended to be an “Internet Radio Player” for sampling your collection and does not allow for interactive use of the collection.
Why do some albums have the wrong album cover art?
We do a search on our database of albums and their covers based on the metadata tags in the file you uploaded. The two major reasons we can’t find the art are:
- The album you’ve uploaded isn’t in our database
- The MP3 Tags in the file you uploaded are incorrect or missing
For example, I have “The Grateful Dead: Dick’s Picks Vol. 18 Disc 1″ – this correctly finds a Grateful Dead album, but gives it the wrong cover because it cannot find a match against “Disc 1″. We’re constantly working on our search algorithms, and you can expect this to get better over time.
The best thing to do at the moment is to use the “Edit Album” tool and search for the correct cover. You can improve the results by removing anything from the album title that looks like it doesn’t belong. I start by deleting words at the end of the title and allowing the search to run and show new results.
Yes! We didn’t realize there were so many of you guys out there! We’re working on it right now.
Will you support FLAC and other lossless files
Yes! This will take a little while though. We’re probably going to introduce this when we add premium services. We want to make sure that streaming works flawlessly with FLAC and that we can support multiple formats adequately. Be aware that you’re going to need a really fat pipe to take advantage of this…
Will you support streaming to phones?
Yes! Check out our instructions on our blog. The instructions for non Windows phones are the same, except you need to find your own internet radio streaming program.

LOVE THE CONCEPT
MN IS GEORGES AND I LIKE TO JOIN
DIDNT YET FIGURE OUT HOW, POINT ME
IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION PLEASE
Ca I put the media master software in my website for some people listen my music, like “RadioBlog”??
Thanks
OS
It would be nice to have a ’share’ option so that you can maybe either send an email to someone about an album or track(s)… and they can hear it from the email… kinda like ‘hey check this artist out’ feature. Otherwise great job it’s everything I was looking for as an online cd collection!!
delete me
Could you please make a feature that allows me to upload my own album art, or add albums to your database? I have a number of smaller label artists that I like to listen to and since they aren’t in your database yet they either get the wrong art or blank covers.
hi,
is there limitation that only certain number of people can listen my radio?
i mean is there any kind of limited slots per account
also what is the bitrate that our radio will be stream, can u change bitrates or its same
thanx
Will you be charging by storage size or bandwidth usage.
I have a large collection but only listen for an hour or so a
day. Will it therefore ‘cost me’ for storage in the future for what I intend to upload now while the service is free?
Hang on,
What if thing goes belly up in 4 to 5 years time (I hope it doesn’t)? that means you and the rest of the company holders will have access to 1000’s of peoples music that they have uploaded and paid for! over the years, how do we know you will erase all the files on your servers?, there is no way we can take the music down off the site is there? I wish you luck with your venture, but what we really need now is for Web radio to expand as that is under threat at the moment, is this sevice or services going to replace Web radio ??
Paul
Watch out. You were just featured on the BBC program Click! Expect a bit of an increase in usage.
Fantastic idea,
I have included a radio page on my website using windows media and the URL link, the page still needs work but is up and running.
I guess the idea is to keep creating playlists and deleting them when you want to change the radio content.
I am uploading my collection a bit at a time and expecting it to take a few weeks, unfortunatly a lot of my music is in Flac format, as the quality is far superior to mp3.
Well done for making this possible, and try to keep it free for as long as you can.
Cheers !
Hi,
I would like some help to change the radio playlist.
Deleting previously loaded playlists does not remove the selection from the radio player, it just continues to play the old selection and the new selection added.
I would like to create themed playlists but that will not work as is.
Hope that makes sence,
Thanks, Bob.
I have noticed that there is no mention of your upload limitations or is there no limits?
Also if you are going to become a popular media machine you’ll need to allow such devises as ‘firewalls’, even after configuration of my firewall, my music radio will not play from the html link you supplied, that includes on the hardrive & web server.
I don’t think many people are prepared to switch firewalls off in order to listen to their music when their are companies like projectplaylist who have a much better system that allows such applications to intergrate with their player.
I thought I’d give mediamaster a try … sadly, it seems to be nothing but problems so far.
I uploaded a couple of albums in the beginning which seemed to work ok, but the last several have been ’skipped’. They upload but they won’t play, or I’m told ‘we’ve skipped this one for now’. Also, some of the albums that I uploaded successfuly will now play only a few tracks before cutting out completely.
The radio url has worked only once so far.
People have told me they can’t use the player on my page.
I think the BBC mentioning mediamaster might have been a mistake as it obviously is having trouble coping with the influx of new users. It would have been nice if the system were prepared a little netter. So, far the experience has been mnediocre. I hope it’ll improve because it’s a great concept, but for now I think I’ll leave it alone before I blow a fuse.
3 out of 10 so far. Sorry.
Seems to a problem when the user uploads their own album cover. It doesn’t show when the selected album is selected to play.
Apart from that, a great service and may it long continue for the future.
I just tried again with a totally different album to the ones I’ve been trying to upload and the result is the same. Just won’t play. Can’t get even one of the tracks to do anything.
If I could get it to work properly I would love to use this service, but it’s just not happening. I don’t know why. Big, big shame. I’ve started to delete the albums that I’ve uploaded so far.
I give up

JG,
I’m sorry you’re having problems – we’re looking into what’s happened to your account and trying to resolve the issue.

i signed up about 7 days ago and began uploading my music collection the same day. so far, i’ve uploaded nearly half of my roughly 700 cd collection.
i have not experienced any issues with the built-in player at all. and the radio station feature is fantastic. i plugged the url into both my roku soundbridges and was able to hear my music broadcast randomly and continously.
there are issues with the stream not being synced, however. i turned on both my roku soundbridges and noticed that one lagged the other by a few seconds.
also, with such a large collection, working with a playlist with thousands of songs in it is painfully slow (i would like to put everything in the radio station). and as one other poster mentioned, there’s no simple way to clear what’s playing on the radio if i should decide that i only want a particular artist to play on my radio today.
but i love the concept of the service. there are just a few minor technical hurdles to overcome. overall, it’s a great start. keep up the good work.
Things seem to be smoothing out. I attempted an upload this morning, just out of curiosity, and it seems to have worked fine, and everything is playing now.
Still having radio url problems, however, but I can live with that for the time being.
Thanks to the excellent customer service and concern given by Neil and Eric I’m more than happy to re-evaluate. Don’t know what was happening there but I hope it’ll be ok from now own. But now mediamaster has a much healthier 7 out of 10. If I continue to experience full, working uploads – aside from the odd minor hiccup – and the url thing works out, I reckon a 10 out of 10′ll be easy.
Hope it goes from strength to strength.
No ogg support, bummer. No dice.
Well … it’s up to 9 out of 10. Most of the time it’s working, it’s beautiful … I’m sorry I had my doubts in the beginning caused by all the problems I seemed to be having. This is excellent. I’ve been happily listening to hours of streamed music.
There are still moments when the url lets me down, and just dies, and there’s a problem when I try to upload my own album art – The jpegs don’t seem to take – but it’s almost that 10/10.
What if you only want to share one song, or one different song on several web pages?
I’m afraid I already know the answer to this, but: once I’ve uploaded files onto the site, can I later download them off again?
I store my music on my ipod because it’s bigger than my computer’s hard drive, and since I discovered this site I’ve been storing it here as well. But I don’t keep music on my hard drive.
So, if I want to introduce my mother to some new music for her shiny new ipod (true story), can i get my songs from here, or do I have to get them off of my ipod again?
Hi! I’m trying to access my account but the website says I need Flash Player 8 or higher. I know I had Flash Player 9.0.45.0 anyway, I clicked Ok but upon returning to the website, it still asks that I need Flash Player 8 or higher. I even rebooted my computer just to make sure the installation of the latest Flash Player was Ok. According to the Flash Player website, my installation was successful.
Please help, I can’t get to my music files.
Thanks!
Hi,
just a question. When I try to move a file to another folder within MY collection, I am offered albums which are not present in my own collection.
Does it mean, that somebody else in the community owns them ? And – what is more important – can I listen to these albums ?

I’ve uploaded over 2000 songs so far but when I click on all songs, it only shows the first 400 loaded. I have a large collection (over 10,000) and woant to know if I’ll have access to it on my radio station or if I’ll be limited to only groups of 400.
hi
its streaming or podcast?
Hi,
Why this GREAT (!) site is not supporting Hebrew file name and tag information?

I love the site, it even works great on the Ubuntu OS, with the exception of a few bugs.
Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing what your site evolves into over the coming months!
